This stunning dining set, comprising six dining chairs and an extending dining table, brings together two iconic examples of British mid century modern design from the 1960s. The set of six dining chairs was produced by A.H. McIntosh of Kirkcaldy, Scotland. Crafted in teak, the chairs feature minimalist frames with softly rounded organic edges and sculpted backrests designed for comfort and elegance. The seats have been freshly upholstered in a richly textured mottled fabric in warm red and orange tones, adding subtle depth and contrast to the warm teak frames. Paired with the chairs is a vintage G Plan oval extending dining table in teak, showcasing the clean lines and sculptural organic forms that defined British mid century furniture design during the era. The table features elegant sled-style pedestal supports and a beautifully grained teak top with softly rounded edges, giving the piece a refined architectural presence. This example retains its original extension functionality and has been thoughtfully restored. Due to irreparable damage to the original veneer on the extension leaves, the central panels were professionally refinished in a contrasting satin black lacquer and properly sealed. The result is a striking two-tone appearance that feels intentional and contemporary while still complementing the warmth of the original teak. The black center section creates a subtle visual break through the middle of the table, adding a modern graphic element that pairs particularly well with the darker detailing and sculptural forms of the McIntosh chairs. Together, the set feels cohesive, refined, and visually balanced — blending classic Scandinavian-inspired British modernism with a more contemporary edge. It began as a pioneering range of furniture in the United Kingdom produced by E Gomme Ltd of High Wycombe. The success of G Plan led to E Gomme becoming one of the UK's largest furniture manufacturers. From 1943, during World War II, furniture sales were controlled by rationing. The ending of this scheme in December 1952, combined with the 1951 Festival of Britain, led to a pent-up demand for more modern furniture. In 1953, Donald Gomme, the designer at E Gomme, decided to produce a range of modern furniture for the entire house which could be bought piece-by-piece according to budgets. Designs were available for several years so people could collect them slowly. All furniture was marked with a distinctive brand mark. British furniture designer Victor Bramwell (V.B.) Wilkins is best known for his Fresco range for G-Plan. Although all of Wilkins known works were produced by G-Plan, there is little biographical information available on the designer. It can be assumed, however, that he worked as an in-house designer for the British manufacturer for many years. In the early 1960s, British furniture manufacturer G-Plan set the standard for modernist, mass-market furniture in postwar Britain. McIntosh - Founded in 1869 by Alexander Henry (A.H) McIntosh (1835-1919) in Kirkcaldy, within the Fife region of Scotland, the business expanded quickly thoughout the UK and internationally, exhibiting at the World Fair in Paris in 1878, and the Sydney Exhibition in 1879. Like many other business during the First World War, McIntosh contributed to the war effort by manufacturing airplane wings and other parts for the duration. By the early 1960s, McIntosh began to move away from producing more traditional style dining and bedroom furniture towards making mid-century style furniture akin to the Danish Modern style.
