Purchased on a recent trip to Morocco, this vintage sterling silver Berber pendant consists of a hand holding a Hassan I 2 1/2 Dirham Coin. The coin serves as the focal point of the pendant, and is embellished by three half-domes and an elongated hand that is integrated into the pendant’s bail. The antique coin was issued in 1900-1901 at the Paris Mint, during the reign of Sultan Abd al-Aziz. (It is marked on the back with the year 1318 from the Islamic Calendar, which corresponds to the year 1900-1901 in the Gregorian calendar.) The front and back of the coin feature the Star of David. Moroccans have a strong historical connection to Judaism; at the turn of the century, many Jewish people lived in Morocco, and every major city still has a Jewish Quarter today. The pendant looks great on a silver chain. It is pictured here on an Art Deco Sterling Silver Graduated Curb Link Watch Chain, available in our shop. The pendant measures 2 1/8” x 1”. It weighs 11.65 grams. It acid tests as sterling silver.
