Family: Ginger (Zingiberacea) Hardy to zones 8 to 12 (Canton Ginger, Cooking Ginger, Common Ginger) Rhizomatous herbaceous perennial that is widely cultivated and no longer found in the wild, thought to have originated in Southeast Asia. Flowers yellow-green to a height of 3 feet. Traditional use (TCM, TWM): A medicinal food, used in cookery for its aromatic and digestive action, also to impart a unique, pungent flavor that enhances the taste of other foods. Chai, curry powder, confections, pastries, candies and drinks. Motion sickness, morning sickness, suppressed menses, headache, abdominal pain, colic, gastritis, diarrhea. In TCM, one of the herbs that warms the interior and dispels cold. Plant prefers sun and a fast-draining soil. Often grown in raised beds. Side-dress with organic compost. Our sturdy plants may be set directly to the garden, field, or large container. When I went to depot the one used for the photos, I had to cut the pot apart with scissors to free the swollen rhizome–it was not difficlut to do this–anyway, it was so vigorous, it got stuck in there.
