Like all rabbitfish, this species possesses venomous dorsal and anal fin spines. [1, 2] Handling: Never handle this fish with bare hands or catch it in standard mesh nets where its spines can get tangled. Stings: A sting causes severe pain and swelling. If stung, submerge the affected area in hot water (as hot as safely tolerable) to break down the protein-based venom, and seek medical attention. [1, 2, 3, 4] Aquarium Requirements Tank Size: Minimum 180 gallons. They grow up to 14 inches long and require significant open swimming space. Dietary Needs: Primarily herbivorous. They require a continuous supply of dried marine algae (Nori), high-quality herbivore pellets, and flake food. They are excellent at clearing nuisance macroalgae like Bryopsis and bubble algae from the tank. Reef Compatibility: Generally considered reef-safe with caution. While they do not eat ornamental shrimp or crabs, hungry individuals may nip at large polyp stony (LPS) corals, zoanthids, or soft coral slime coats. Keep them well-fed to prevent this behavior. Temperament: Highly peaceful toward other tank mates, including aggressive tangs and delicate wrasses. However, they will fight with members of their own species or closely related rabbitfish unless kept in massive systems as a mated pair. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
