During our previous visit to Colombia, we had the chance to meet Emerson Felipe Narváez at his farm, Finca El Turpial. Emerson is a well-known producer in Nariño, recognized for his work with rare varieties and expressive coffees. His work at El Turpial was also recognized through La Mejor Taza de Mi Nariño (Best Cup of Narino) 2023. Finca El Turpial is led by Emerson Felipe Narváez in Cumbitara, Nariño, Colombia. Emerson returned to coffee after years away from his family’s land, rebuilding the farm with a focus on rare varieties and high-quality processing. His work at El Turpial is not based on volume, but on producing coffees with clear identity and strong cup character. This lot is Sudan Rume, a rare variety known for its expressive and delicate profile. Grown at around 2,200 meters above sea level, the coffee benefits from the high-altitude conditions of Nariño and the microclimate around Cumbitara. The coffee is processed as a natural, meaning the cherries are dried with the fruit still on the seed. This helps bring out more fruit sweetness, body, and depth in the cup. For this lot, expect a vibrant and juicy profile with floral and fruity brightness, notes of hibiscus tea, blackcurrant candy, and pink guava sweetness. For us, this coffee is about Emerson’s focus on rare varieties, careful processing, and the specific character of El Turpial.
