Kimono Dress Gown with String Belt – Upcycled from Vintage Women’s Japanese Kimono “agarifuji”, DRE035
Kimono Dress Gown & String Belt Upcycled from a Genuine Vintage Japanese Kimono This dress gown is carefully upcycled from a genuine vintage Japanese silk kimono, originally worn as a women’s black crested kimono — a formal garment with a strong cultural role in Japan. Historically, women’s black crested kimonos were worn for highly formal occasions, most often funerals, in postwar Japan. In some regions, the same kimono was also worn with hakama for graduation ceremonies, reflecting its significance as a ceremonial garment marking important life transitions. The fabric is Habutae (羽二重), a silk known for its smooth texture. I carefully handpicked this kimono piece, which is in very good condition for a vintage garment. This piece is not intended to casualize mourning attire, but to respectfully reinterpret a formal garment that has already fulfilled its original ceremonial role. By transforming the silhouette while preserving the dignity of the fabric, I propose a way of wearing a vintage kimono as a coat-like garment for modern life. I do not aim to make light of mourning wear. Rather, I seek to give new life to formal garments that are no longer worn, allowing their beauty and presence to exist in the present.
