Xerochrysum, also called Helichrysum or strawflower, is an easy annual to grow. It produces lots of long-stemmed, many-petalled flowers over a long period from July until November. For dried flowers, pick the stems as the buds begin to open and hang them upside down in a shed or garage. They will keep their colour for years, and at Christmas can be transformed into sustainable garlands and tree decorations. Xerochrysum (Xerochrysum bracteatum) is a half-hardy annual. Sow seeds from March to June. Plant them outside after the risk of frost is over. Plants grow up to 70 cm tall.
