Platycerium 'Pegasus' pups available, mature form shown Platycerium 'Pegasus' is a striking hybrid staghorn fern prized for its broad, heavily silvered fronds and dramatic sculptural form. Mature fertile fronds develop thick, antler-like branching with a strong upright habit, while the dense coating of silvery trichomes gives the plant a pale, frosted appearance that stands out beautifully when mounted. More architectural and refined than common staghorns, 'Pegasus' is highly sought-after by collectors for its bold texture and impressive mature form. It thrives mounted on timber or displayed in hanging baskets where its shape can fully develop over time. Non-toxic to pets. Comprehensive Care Instructions for Platycerium 'Pegasus' Lighting Requirements Indoors: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Gentle morning sun is tolerated, but avoid harsh afternoon exposure. Outdoors (mild climates): Best in filtered light or bright shade with protection from strong wind and intense summer sun. Watering Regimen Mounted Plants: Soak or thoroughly drench the root zone once the moss or mounting medium begins to dry. Allow airflow and partial drying between waterings. Potted or Basket-Grown Plants: Water when the medium becomes lightly dry but avoid prolonged wetness around the crown. Temperature & Humidity Thrives between 16°C–28°C. Prefers moderate to high humidity with strong airflow. Protect from frost and cold, stagnant conditions. Fertilizing Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Apply lightly around the root zone or in soak water. Pruning & Maintenance Do not remove shield fronds as they protect the roots and store nutrients. Avoid rubbing the silvery coating on the fertile fronds, as these trichomes help regulate moisture and light. Repotting or Remounting Best grown mounted or in open hanging baskets with excellent airflow. Remount only when the plant significantly outgrows its support. Pests & Troubleshooting Generally low maintenance but may attract scale or mealybugs in warm indoor conditions. Blackening at the base can indicate excess moisture or insufficient airflow. Important Note: A Statement Hybrid Platycerium 'Pegasus' is grown for its dramatic mature form and silver-toned foliage. Given time and the right conditions, it becomes a true living sculpture and centrepiece plant.
