A Terracotta Tortoise Figure

Han Dynasty, China, 206 BC-220BCE Painted terracotta figure of a tortoise modeled in red clay with a gently rounded form, retaining areas of earthen encrustation accumulated during centuries buried underground. In Chinese tradition, the tortoise symbolizes longevity, protection, and cosmic stability, making such figures significant within ritual and funerary culture. Made from reddish terra cotta, the sculpture is covered in a white slip with faint traces of glazed material. The piece is well-molded with an upturned head, bulging eyes, and a grooved carapace.
