Balvenie 21 year old Port Wood
Balvenie 21 year old Port Wood The 21 Year Old Port Wood is a distinguished single malt Scotch whisky crafted by The Balvenie distillery. As part of their core range, this whisky is celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and unique maturation process in Port wine casks. Initially, the whisky undergoes a 21-year aging process in traditional oak casks, embodying Balvenie's signature quality. It is then transferred to casks that previously held fine Port wine for an additional maturation phase. This secondary aging in Port wood casks imparts distinctive flavors and characteristics, resulting in a truly remarkable release. The Balvenie 21 Year Old Port Wood boasts a complex and refined flavor profile. The influence of the Port casks introduces layers of rich, fruity sweetness, with notes of ripe berries, dried fruits, and a hint of nuttiness. These flavors are elegantly balanced by the smooth and mellow character developed during the extended aging in oak casks. Balvenie distillery Balvenie distillery is located in Dufftown. It was built in 1892 on the site of a mansion. The original name of the distillery was Glen Gordon but it was quickly changed. Not an awful lot happened at the distillery other than continuous and almost uninterrupted production until 1957. On that year the production capacity of the distillery was doubled. The first Balvenie single malt was released in 1973. Up until then the vast majority of its production was used in blends. After Kininvie distillery was built in 1990 some more Balvenie whisky could be sold as a single malt. The whisky produced at Balvenie derives its character from the usage of sturdy and short pot stills. A short fermentation period is also preferred.
