Liquidambar styraciflua - American Sweetgum

Liquidambar Liquidambar (Liquidambar styraciflua), also known as the American Sweetgum, is a magnificent deciduous shade tree prized for its spectacular autumn colour and attractive, maple-like foliage. Throughout spring and summer, Liquidambar develops a dense canopy of glossy green, star-shaped leaves, providing excellent shade during the warmer months. As temperatures cool in autumn, the foliage transforms into a brilliant display of yellow, orange, red, burgundy and deep purple before falling for winter. Growing approximately 10–15 metres tall and 6–8 metres wide in cultivation, Liquidambar makes an impressive feature or shade tree for larger gardens, acreage properties, driveways and open landscapes. It performs best in full sun and prefers fertile, well-drained soil with reliable moisture while establishing. A hardy and long-lived tree once established, Liquidambar is particularly valued for its seasonal interest, attractive form and outstanding autumn display. Position Full sun is best for strong growth and the most vibrant autumn colour. Allow plenty of space away from buildings, paving and underground services due to its eventual size and root system. Growth Moderate to fast growing, developing into a large deciduous tree approximately 10–15 m tall and 6–8 m wide in garden conditions. Planting Guide Allow approximately 6–8 metres apart for Liquidambar when planting as individual shade or feature trees, giving them enough room to develop their natural canopy. For an avenue or more continuous effect, they can be planted around 4–5 metres apart. Plant Care Prefers fertile, deep, well-drained soil with consistent moisture, particularly while establishing. It can tolerate a range of soil types but performs best where the soil does not dry out excessively. Mulch well and water regularly during hot or dry periods.
