This enchanting Arts & Crafts era brooch is a tiny nocturnal garden, artfully designed and meticulously hand-crafted in 14 karat gold by Gustav Manz for F.W. Lawrence, circa 1900. Tiny pearl grapes with a lovely pink sheen peek through realistically rendered gold leaves that intertwine with diamond-set figs. A luminous opal, alive with electric flashes of color, brings a striking contrast to the warm gold and delicate pearl grapes. The gold leaves and vines are richly textured with a time honored patina which enhances the sculptural details. The pairing of grapes and figs calls to mind the ancient symbolism of the vine and fig tree, long associated with peace and plenty. Whether this was the artist's intended meaning remains unknown, but the possibility adds another layer of interest to an already compelling composition. A rare and wonderful work of jewelry art. Diamonds: approximately .20 ct each, VS1 - VS2 range in clarity with J color Opal: 7.86 x 6.07 x 1.57mm Weight: 10.2 grams Measurements: 1 3/16" x 1 1/4" Notes: The pairing of grapes and figs invites associations with the ancient symbolism of the vine and fig tree, a biblical image of peace, security, and abundance, although the precise meaning intended by the artist remains unknown.
