Finnish Folk Art Hand-Carved Wooden Table Lamp, 1940s

Finnish Folk Art Hand-Carved Wooden Table Lamp, 1940s

Brand: Roomage
SKU: LI615

A one-of-a-kind Finnish folk art table lamp from the 1940s, made almost entirely from carved wood. The lamp is richly decorated throughout, with carved roses and leaves covering the shade, while the base combines floral motifs, stippled surfaces and a sculptural turned central column. Even the wooden shade is extensively worked, with a scalloped lower edge and different carved floral compositions around its sides. What makes the lamp especially remarkable is the amount of skill and patience involved in its making. Nearly every visible wooden surface has been worked by hand, yet the decoration remains carefully balanced across the entire piece. The maker has combined relief carving, incised details, stippling and sculptural shaping into a coherent design, with particular attention given to the roses and foliage of the shade. It is clearly the work of someone with considerable woodworking ability and a strong individual sense of design. The extensive use of wood and hand-worked decoration connects the lamp to Nordic folk craft traditions. It is also reminiscent of Finnish wartime and immediate post-war craft, when locally available materials and traditional woodworking played an important role in domestic objects. With no known provenance, however, this particular lamp cannot be specifically attributed to wartime production. Both a functional lamp and a piece of folk art, it has a strong handmade character that changes considerably between daylight and when illuminated. When switched on, light escapes beneath the solid wooden shade and softly illuminates the carved upper section of the base. Its compact proportions make it particularly suitable for a side table, bedside table or smaller console.
