A beautiful late Victorian 18ct gold five-stone diamond carved half-hoop ring, dating to circa 1880 with delicate diamond points nestled between the principal stones. The diamonds are particularly attractive, displaying a beautiful bright white appearance with exceptional sparkle and clarity. Each stone has been individually cut by hand, with the slightly irregular shapes, high crowns and broad facets that make old mine-cut diamonds so special. Unlike modern brilliant-cut diamonds, which are cut to more standardised proportions, no two old mine cuts are quite alike, giving this ring a wonderful individuality. The five principal diamonds are arranged in a gently graduated row, with the largest at the centre, creating a beautifully balanced design that sits elegantly across the finger. Between the larger diamonds are tiny diamond points, adding little flashes of sparkle and filling the spaces between the stones to create a continuous display of diamonds. The ring is mounted in a traditional Victorian carved half-hoop setting, one of the most recognisable ring designs of the late 19th century. The half-hoop style had existed for many years, but during the Victorian period it became particularly fashionable to decorate the gold galleries with intricate scrolling and foliate designs. The term half hoop refers to the way the gemstones are arranged across the upper portion of the band, rather than continuing all the way around the finger, while carved describes the beautifully worked gold settings surrounding them. These designs became especially popular in British jewellery during the latter half of the 19th century, often featuring three or five graduated diamonds or coloured gemstones. One of the most attractive features of this ring is the wonderfully detailed goldwork. Elegant scrolling decoration runs along the sides of the setting and continues towards the shoulders, giving the ring a lovely sense of depth and craftsmanship. The little diamond points nestled between the principal stones are another characteristic feature of these traditional Victorian designs. The warmth of the 18ct yellow gold provides a beautiful contrast to the bright white diamonds, allowing their individual hand-cut facets to catch the light wonderfully. Five-stone diamond rings were popular during the Victorian period as tokens of love and commitment. Today, their continuous row of sparkling diamonds makes them an equally lovely choice for an engagement ring, wedding anniversary or simply a beautiful ring to wear and enjoy. A particularly fine example of late Victorian jewellery, combining five wonderfully clear old mine-cut diamonds, delicate diamond points and beautifully carved goldwork. A timeless and romantic ring, with all the individuality and craftsmanship that makes antique jewellery so special.
