Brand: Morihei 森平 Producing Area: Tsushima, Nagasaki - Japan Strata: N.A. (see notes) Appearance: Almost black-blue when dry, but very black when wet. Size: 215mm x 79mm x 50mm Weight: 2341g Grit Range: 4000-7000 1-5 Scale: 1 = Less, 5 = More Hardness Level: 4 Scratch Depth: 2 Speed: 2.5 Wear Rate: 2 Self Slurry: 2.5 Ease of Use: 3 Recommended Uses: pre-polish or finishing polish for wide bevel knives, tools, and razors; keen edges Notes: Tsushima has become a fairly well-known stone over the past decade, especially given their rather unique origin, consistency, and relative affordability. While some are quarried on land, the darker, often black or dark gray stones are quarried under water off the small island, Tsushima. They are remarkably consistent both within the stone itself, and from stone to stone, and why they are often used as nagura. The stone is fairly hard, although it can be gouged. The feedback is pleasant, but requires some skill not to slip when sharpening edges. The particles are fine and friable, making them ideal for polishing, and often leads a bright polish on both hagane and jjigane. Hard enough for some tools and razors. A good stone for beginners or intermediate users looking for a final polisher or one of the last stones in a polishing sequence.
