Family: Aster (Asteraceae) Annual. 108 days to maturity. Showy, single or multiple flowers per plant, flowering up to 12 feet tall on robust stalks. These heirloom striped-seeded sunflowers produce extra-large seeds–the largest we have ever encountered. Highly productive and good to eat. Direct seed in the garden after the soil has warmed a bit in the spring. Put sunflowers to the back, as they tend to block access if you put them right in front. Normally sunflowers are thinned to at least a foot between each plant, and the rows are spaced about 3 feet apart. Allowing the seeds to mature on the plant is the best way to assure fully ripe seeds at harvest. After the heads have matured, and before the birds get them, rub the face of the disk, thereby removing the corollas, and protect the head with a disposable hairnet. These can be purchased inexpensively in bulk. Allow to mature until the ray flowers are completely dried up. Then harvest, rub on a screen to remove the seeds, wind-winnow to purity. Good snacking! 20 seeds per packet, certified organically grown
