Candle Set 01 - The Odd Couple
Candle #1: Ron's Garden It doesn't announce itself. You walk into it. You notice it a minute after you sit down, and then you can't stop noticing it. Green. Warm. A little sharp. He was in that garden every day from April to October, so that was just what he smelled like. He never chose it. He'd have been embarrassed to know I noticed. It won't fill your house. It was never going to. It just sits there being pleasant and asking nothing of anybody. Which is the exact opposite of the other one. Fragrance Notes: Top: Tomato Leaf, Lemon Peel Middle: Lemon Grass, Thyme, Basil Base: Moss, Green Leaves Candle #2: Isabel's Jewellery This one gets to the room before you do. You'll know the second it's lit. So will the neighbours. She put it on for the pharmacy. She put it on for a Tuesday. His smell was an accident. Hers was a decision. It is not subtle, it does not care that it isn't, and if you asked it to tone things down it would tell you to mind your business and then talk for another forty minutes. It's a lot. She was a lot. That was the point of her. Fragrance Notes: Top: Pink Pepper, Grapefruit and Plum Middle: Dark Rose and Spices Base: Vanilla, Patchouli and Labdanum Candle Care Instructions Most of this is common sense. One part isn't, so start there. The first burn decides everything. Light it and leave it lit until the melted wax reaches the edge of the glass, all the way around. That takes three to four hours. Wax has a memory. Whatever it does the first time, it does forever. Cut the first burn short and it'll tunnel straight down the middle and leave you a ring of wax you'll never get back. So the first time, give it the afternoon. Every time after that. Trim the wick before you light it, down to about a quarter inch. Nail clippers work. A long wick is what gives you the black smoke and the soot on the glass. Four hours is the limit in one sitting. Past that the flame gets big, the glass gets hot, and the scent starts to fade on you anyway. Snuff it, don't blow it. Blowing it out sends smoke through the room and the wick usually ends up crooked. Where to put it. Somewhere flat and heat-proof. It gets hot enough to mark a wood table or a stone counter, so put something under it. Nothing above it. Nothing beside it. Curtains, paper, the corner of a placemat, all of it counts. Keep it out of a draft. A vent or an open window makes the flame dance, and a dancing flame burns the wax unevenly and smokes. Ten centimetres, about four inches, between the two of them if you're burning both. Never leave it burning in an empty room. Not for a minute. Not while you run out to the car. Keep it away from kids and pets. A tail clears a coffee table faster than you'd think. When it's done. Stop when there's about half a centimetre of wax left, or when you can see the metal at the base of the wick. There's not much left at that point and the glass gets too hot without wax to protect it. In between. Let it cool all the way before you pick it up or move it. Store it somewhere cool and dry. Not a windowsill. Sun fades the wax and dulls the scent. If the wick has drifted off-centre, nudge it back while the wax is soft but the flame is out. That's it. Trim it, watch it, don't rush the first one.
