Burundi - Kayanza - Washed

This lot comes from the Masha Washing Station in Kayanza, where more than 3,200 smallholder farmers contribute freshly harvested cherries throughout the harvest season. Most producers in this region cultivate only a fraction of a hectare of land, often relying on coffee as their primary source of income. While each farm may be small, together they create coffees that beautifully reflect the character of the surrounding landscape. The station takes its name from the Masha sub-hill, a region historically known for its cattle herds long before it became known for coffee. Today, Masha stands as an important gathering point for local farming communities, transforming thousands of small deliveries of coffee cherry into some of Burundi’s most celebrated coffees. This microlot was selected from the highest-scoring day lots produced at the washing station, highlighting the vibrant character and exceptional quality that have made Kayanza one of Burundi’s most respected coffee-growing regions. Traditional washed processing, careful fermentation, and slow drying on raised beds create a cup with clarity, sweetness, and balance.
