Goryeo Marbled Celadon Oil Pod

An oil pot created using the marbled clay technique during the Goryeo Dynasty. The body is low-profile, expanding into an elliptical shape reminiscent of an abacus bead, and is topped with a thick rim. Marbled clay that creates marble-like patterns by kneading together different types of clay; it is particularly striking on simple vessel surfaces. In Korea, this process typically involves three types of clay celadon clay, white clay, and red clay finished with a near-transparent celadon glaze. This particular piece is meticulously crafted, displaying distinct separations between the white, gray, and black clays. While the body features the marbled design, the rim is made solely of white clay a refined design choice. Such designs, which incorporate a distinct shift in material, are considered hallmarks of top-quality marbled Celadon ware. Traces remain on the base where stones were placed to prevent the piece from adhering to the kiln floor during firing. Because marbled ware involves mixing clays with differing shrinkage rates, the pieces are prone to damage during the firing process. Consequently, well-preserved examples are exceedingly rare. Overall, the piece is in good condition with a soft, lustrous sheen. There is some slight fading of the surface gloss on a portion of the base. There is one small area of chip on the rim.
