Vintage Japanese Rosewood Haribako Sewing Box
Vintage (early to mid 20th Century) fine quality rosewood sewing box called a Haribako. The front of the case and drawer fronts are all high quality rosewood with a beautiful deep colour and strong grain pattern. The rest of the case is Sugi (Japanese Cedar). With finely made copper handles. The top folds and opens and then a tiny latch holds it in place when open. There is also a sewing clamp inside the top which connects to a little pop up pole, very curious! There is a small slot at the back on one side of the case. This would have originally held a traditional bamboo ruler. Found on our most recent trip to Kyoto in May 2026. This Hari Bako would have originally held sewing implements, threads, needles, pin cushions etc. These days they are perfect for holding all those little things that don't have a nice place to live! Measures 29cm x 18cm x 23cm
