This is a classic Model 116 Tulip Swivel Armchair, designed in the 1960s by Maurice Burke for the British manufacturer Arkana. Inspired by Eero Saarinen's famous pedestal designs for Knoll, Burke's interpretation became a space-age icon in its own right. Burke's modified Arkana chairs achieved cult status after being extensively used as bridge seating on the USS Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series. Unlike Saarinen's round, circular base, Burke's signature design utilizes a cast aluminum, 4-point "starburst" swivel base. The sleek, molded bucket-seat shell is constructed from durable white fiberglass. The cushion has been reupholstered in a rich, bright, period-accurate orange polyester. Overall good condition with some wear on the fiberglass shell. The seat is newly upholstered.
