Vintage Afghan Turkmen Kilim Area Rug – Handwoven Wool Flatweave In Terracotta & Red Geometric Stripes
A durable, authentic tribal area rug from Northern Afghanistan in excellent condition, featuring rows and rows of detailed geometric stripes. Handwoven in wool on cotton in terracottas and reds, using a mix of flatweave and ciçim brocade techniques to create the patterned stripes. Fun Fact: The “S” motifs are a traditional highly revered protective symbol meant to ward off the "Evil Eye" or negative energies. They essentially act as a protective shield woven along the structural boundaries of the rug. Because of its tight weave this kilim would be ideal as an area rug in a higher traffic area such as a licing room. Size: 275cm x 180cm (109" x 70") Measured in the middle because the ends are slightly different widths. This slight geometric irregularity is the direct result of changing weaver tension on a traditional upright vertical loom. It serves as highly desirable physical proof of its completely handwoven, non-industrial origin. All our rugs have been cleaned, repaired and moth-treated. Handmade in Afghanistan, late 20th Century vintage
