1960s Viennese Franz Niederle Coat and Skirt Set
From the Closet of: Jenny Cipoletti Label: Modellsalon Era: 1960s Era: Medium/Large About the Item: "This one is my favorite story," says Jenny Cipoletti. She discovered this striking Viennese ensemble—a blue-and-silver floral jacquard coat with a sumptuous velvet collar and matching A-line skirt—while vintage shopping in Vienna at Designer Second Hand Vienna in 2021 during an inspiration trip for her footwear collaboration with Sarah Flint. "I just thought it was so beautifully unique with the velvet collar and the little round buttons that go all the way down, and that it came with a matching skirt." Found in a small Viennese vintage shop, the set has remained in her closet ever since. "It's been sitting in my closet, and I've always had this intention of getting it tailored," she says. "When I was pulling for this, I was like, you know what? I think this is going to lend itself to a story as opposed to an outfit." About the Label: Little is known today about Modellsalon Franz Niederle, one of the many independent couture and dressmaking salons that flourished in postwar Vienna. Located at Graben 27 in the city's historic First District, the salon catered to a clientele that prized impeccable craftsmanship and elegant, custom-made clothing. This ensemble, likely dating to the 1950s or 1960s, is emblematic of that tradition: beautifully constructed, quietly glamorous, and increasingly rare to find intact.
