Balinese Nawa Sari keris hilt

Within Balinese spiritual tradition, Nawa Sari, also known as Bhuta Nawa Sari, is represented as a powerful guardian figure associated with protection against harmful influences. Such fearsome figures occupy an important place in Balinese art, where their intimidating appearance is not considered malevolent, but protective. Their expressive faces, prominent teeth and dynamic postures symbolise the power required to repel negative forces and preserve spiritual balance.Nawa Sari is also depicted in the form of elaborately carved keris hilts. In this context, the figure serves not merely as decoration, but as a protective and symbolic presence attached to the keris, an object that holds both practical and spiritual importance within Balinese culture. This particularly fine example is carved from dense black ebony and depicts Nawa Sari seated in a commanding pose. The figure is rendered with a strongly expressive face, prominent eyes, fangs and finely worked hair. One arm is raised behind the head holding a pudak flower, while the other is held close to the body, creating the animated and asymmetrical composition characteristic of Balinese figural carving. The dark ebony is richly contrasted by an elaborate silver base and a silver-covered tumpal throne. The throne is decorated with finely chased floral and foliate ornament, while the rounded elements around the base provide the composition with additional volume and visual balance. The clothing, jewellery, headdress and other applied ornaments are highlighted with 22-carat gold, creating a refined contrast between the black wood, cool silver and warm golden details. The quality of the carving is especially visible in the expressive facial features, carefully defined hands and feet, layered costume and detailed surface ornament. The extensive use of precious metals further emphasises the prestigious character of the hilt. Altogether, this is an imposing and highly decorative representation of Nawa Sari, combining powerful religious imagery with accomplished Balinese craftsmanship. Looking at the overal craftsmanship, patina and chosen material, I would date this example to the early to mid 20th century.
