Sara Lowes - Studio Astray
Sara Lowes is a textile artist whose practice explores sustainable textile traditions across cultures and generations, and how these techniques can be reimagined to transform discarded fabrics into contemporary garments, costume and textiles that hold stories of memory, identity and connection. Through a combination of traditional craft and contemporary design, her work gives new life to overlooked materials, honouring the histories embedded within cloth while weaving new connections between people, place and tradition. Studio Astray is a collaborative strand of her practice, developed in partnership with block-printing and embroidery artisans in Kutch, Gujarat, and pattern cutters and makers in Cornwall. Together, they transform overlooked materials into contemporary garments, quilts and textile hangings using the traditionally sustainable craft practices of indigo dyeing, hand embroidery and ajrakh block printing techniques. Through shared knowledge, co-creative making and the exchange of skills, Studio Astray reimagines existing traditions and resources into thoughtful contemporary designs that honour both heritage and innovation.
