USS Texas Bombarding Omaha Beach, 6th June 1944 - Steven Dews

At 06:24, after completing her assigned task bombarding Point du Hoc, firing 255 shells in 34 minutes, at an average rate of 7.5 shells per minute, the longest sustained period of shelling USS Texas discharged during WW2, She then moved east to Omaha Beach. At 12:23, USS Texas closed within 3000 yards of the beach at Omaha at an exit referred to as D1. This small gap was the main route off the western end of Omaha. The church spiral is in the town of Vierville. Texas pounded the area, firing her 14inch shells at almost zero degrees elevation. She assisted the ground troops as they bravely inched their way through the murderous German defences. Whilst with the GI’s landing at Normandy, the young reporter, Ernest Hemingway is quoted as saying of USS Texas, “there would be a flash like a blast furnace from the 14inch guns of the Texas, then the yellow-brown smoke would cloud out and, with the smoke still rolling, the concussion and the report would hit us, jarring the men's helmets.
