Lye (Sodium Hydroxide): An essential part of traditional soapmaking, lye reacts with fats to create soap (a process called saponification). Once cured, no lye remains in the final product — only safe, skin-loving soap. Storage and shelf life Cold-processed soap bars generally get better as they age — like a cask of whiskey or wine! To maximize the life of your bar, rinse after each use and leave it in a dry place or drainage rack to dry, to prevent bacterial growth and the soap from washing away. Bars will last the average individual 3-5 weeks, dependent on the frequency of use and care of the bar. Recommended use within 12 months but bars will last much longer; scent may fade. Questions? Will the lye hurt my skin? No, because we make our soap the traditional way, allowing it 3-4 weeks to cure, the lye (sodium hydroxide and water) has dissipated almost entirely by the time the soap reaches your hands! Will my bar make suds? Because tallow gives a lower lather than most other chemical ingredients or synthetic foaming agents, the soap won't give lots of suds, but it will have a whole lot of slip! We suggest putting it in a little soap bag if you prefer the extra bubbles ;) Do the scented bars have a strong scent? No, because we use natural essential oils rather than synthetic or artificial fragrance, the scent is quite mild!
