August 15–16, 2026: Chair Caning Workshop with Sandy Bulgrin (BYOC)

This is a 2-day class (August 15–16, 2026 from 9am to 4pm EST both days) Learn the art of hand caning in this two-day workshop led by Sandy Bulgrin. Sandy will teach the traditional 7-step chair caning method for chairs with pre-drilled holes. This is a BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair) class, meaning you'll spend both days working on your own chair, and you'll leave with a beautifully caned seat you can use and enjoy at home. About the Teacher Sandy has been teaching basket weaving and caning for over 20 years, having started with teaching 4-H kids, which she still continues today. Sandy teaches at local museums in Racine and Kenosha, Wisconsin along with many areas in Illinois. Sandy has also taught at the IL and MO gourd shows plus many basket conventions. Additionally, Sandy is a co-coordinator of the Basket Weaving Cruise, which takes places every two years. Sandy enjoys traveling and teaching both baskets and gourds. What to Bring Your own chair – It must have pre-drilled holes for caning (not a pressed cane groove). Round chairs are not ideal for a first caning project. Your chair must be ready to cane when you arrive. Remove all old caning material before class. Tip: Before you remove the old cane, take photos of the seat, especially the corners. It's great as a before-and-after keepsake and can serve as a helpful reference during class. Don't have a chair? Basket Makers Supply has chairs available for an additional cost. Supplies Cane, caning pegs, sponges, and all other materials will be provided by Basket Maker's Supply. Before Class: A Quick Consult with Sandy Prior to the workshop, Sandy will schedule a short FaceTime or Zoom call with each student. She'll look at your chair, discuss the pattern, and help measure so the correct size cane is ordered for your chair. Who This Class Is For This workshop is perfect for beginners or anyone who's been wanting to restore a family heirloom or flea market find. No prior caning experience needed.
