Tongolele Water Cup
Named for Tongolele, the legendary vedette whose arrival in Mexico City in the late 1940s helped define a new era of cabaret. With her feline dancing, dramatic costumes, famous white streak of hair and unapologetically sensual stage presence, she became one of the most recognizable figures of Mexico’s mid-century nightlife and cinema The glass takes its cue from that same voluptuousness: a generous, rounded bowl narrowing into a short, sculpted waist before opening again at the foot. Curvaceous, theatrical and just a little extravagant, the Tongolele Goblet was designed to have the same thing its namesake had in abundance: presence.Dimensions Care Dishwasher safe. Do not submit to extreme temperature changes.About Glass from Hidalgo Hidalgo has a long, largely uncelebrated history of small-scale glassmaking. Family-operated factories continue to work with recycled glass, melting discarded bottles and fragments and returning them to use as blown and pressed vessels of remarkable weight, color, and clarity.Glassmaking has traditionally been a male trade in Mexico, but some of the factories that remain in Hidalgo are now sustained largely by women. As men left the furnaces for the dangerous economy surrounding huachicol, the illicit fuel trade that has profoundly affected the region, women learned the work and became essential to keeping the factories alive. The glass reflects that persistence. Dense, luminous, and often imperfect, it is shaped by an industry adapting to the realities around it while preserving the knowledge of heat, timing, and practiced hands.About Handmade Pieces Crafted by hand using techniques passed down through generations of master artisans. Variations in color, texture, and finish are inherent to the process; each piece is, by nature, one of a kind.
