Drosera nidiformis (Sundew)

Drosera nidiformis is a perennial sundew native to eastern South Africa, from the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu-Natal. It grows in moist, nutrient-poor conditions within a subtropical climate. The plant forms an open rosette of slender, spoon-shaped leaves, with younger foliage held upright and older leaves spreading outwards, giving it a distinctive, loosely layered appearance. The trapping surfaces bear fine glandular tentacles tipped with glistening droplets of sticky mucilage. Small insects become caught on contact, and the leaves gradually curl around their prey, increasing contact with the digestive glands. Absorbed nutrients supplement those available from the soil. Green foliage develops reddish tones under strong light, while slender flower stalks carry small, self-pollinating flowers that can produce abundant seed. Its compact habit and readily observable trapping movements make D. nidiformis an interesting species for both new growers and established collections. It does not require a winter dormancy and can continue growing throughout the year under suitable conditions, although growth may slow during cooler, darker months.
