Goorialla (The Rainbow Serpent)

This painting represents Goorialla, The Rainbow Serpent, who is a minder and keeper of life as we know it. Goorialla is a very sacred creator in Aboriginal culture, and is the embodiment of life as it snakes along, creating the river systems and carving out Country we walk upon today. Goorialla gives its colours to the many animal totems, the plants and trees, and the beautiful surroundings – past, present, and yet to emerge. I dreamt of the Rainbow Serpent one night and the next day I shared my dream with a Noongar elder who, on her Country, the Rainbow Serpent is called ‘Wunambi’. She explained that I was very lucky ‘Wunambi’ entered my dreams and that a bright and prosperous journey lay ahead. Ever since that dream, I’m connected to the powerful but beautiful presence of the Rainbow Serpent, and paint what I saw in my dream whenever I feel the need to. This painting represents Goorialla creating river systems for all the animals and fish to thrive, as it journeys to its next created destination.
