The 10-piece electro-acoustic ensemble The Black Nothing and composer Anders Filipsen will release their long-awaited new and fourth album “Midt i en Fremtid”. The work is deeply personal: through music and text, it expresses the existential and emotional experiences that arise when someone close is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As Anders Filipsen describes the time spent with his father: “This album is the sound of a time when what once was ceased to be, and something new emerged. It is a loving song to the moments we share now – in the midst of all that has disappeared.” On “Midt i en Fremtid”, the music moves between fully composed passages, free improvisation, and graphic scores. Each of the ten musicians contributes their own artistic voice and experience, creating a unified expression in which individual playing and collective sound merge. The different parts of the album function as tableaux of moments marked by gradual decline, filled with silence, repetition, and intensity – a landscape where presence and memory meet in sound. The fragile and reflective single “Nelly”, inspired by Filipsen’s fathers last memory, will be released on May 1st. 2026. Anders Filipsen and The Black Nothing are known for their distinctive blend of avant-garde jazz, contemporary classical music, and experimental electronics. The ensemble’s members are prominent figures on the European improvised, jazz, and experimental music scenes. The band has released three previous albums and creates music that is eclectic, vital, and emotionally charged, allowing space for both individual expression and collective interplay. In addition to their work within experimental music, the musicians are also known from collaborations and projects such as: Girls in Airports, Nils Skousen, The Savage Rose, Copenhagen Clarinet Choir, Bisse, Sekten. The Black Nothing has previously been described as: “...a stylistically eclectic remix that Charles Ives, Claude Debussy, Gil Evans, Albert Ayler, Toru Takemitsu and Frank Zappa might have created together... Filipsen’s music is surprising, yet also vital, agile, melancholic, and richly diverse.” (Orkesterjournalen) “Anders Filipsen should perhaps be described as a sound artist rather than a musician... There is a strong sense that Filipsen has followed a single sound through space and time since emerging as a leading improviser on the Danish scene.” (Brian Morton, Jazz Journal)
