Featuring Palestinian Thobes, 2027 Calendar The thobe is a traditional Palestinian dress that provides one of the most important and enduring symbols of the Palestinian people’s cultural identity and connection to their land. Palestinian embroidery (tatreez), traditionally used to ornament these thobes tells a different story about each of the villages. Dresses are passed down from one generation to the next, reflecting both a shared history and future for Palestinians who will one day return to their beloved villages. The dresses in this collection were stitched by women across Palestine before the Nakba or “catastrophe” of 1948 when the newly formed state of Israel expelled 850,000 Palestinians from their homeland. Like the Palestinian people, these thobes have persevered despite decades of continuous displacement, war, and occupation. Their existence is a testament to the strength of the Palestinian collective memory, identity and will to resist and return.
