This vessel is based on a Nezumi-Shino tea bowl from the Azuchi–Momoyama period. It was fired in a wood-fired kiln in Oishida, Yamagata. The ash from the wood firing changed the original look of Nezumi-Shino ware. In ordinary Shino ware, patterns are painted with iron pigment. In Nezumi-Shino, the whole surface is covered with iron slip, and parts are scraped away to create the design.
