Pirkka Dining Set by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Asko & Laukaan Puu, 1950s
Pirkka dining set by Ilmari Tapiovaara for Asko and Laukaan Puu, rare first edition from 1955. Complete set with large dining table, four chairs and matching bench in solid pine and black-lacquered birch. This early Finnish set was purchased in 1959 as a wedding gift from HABU, an interior architecture firm in Amsterdam. The chairs and bench bear the Asko stamp, while one chair bears the Laukaan Puu stamp. The price is for the complete set of table, four chairs and bench. Dimensions table: 180 × 81.5 × 73.5 cm (W×D×H). Bench: 180 × 26 × 42 cm (W×D×H). Chairs: 39.5 × 43.5 × 75 cm (W×D×H), seat height 42 cm. Marked: ‘Asko, Tapiovaara Design made in Finland’ and ‘Laukaan Puu, made in Finland, Tapiovaara Design’. The condition of this Pirkka dining set is very good, with normal signs of use consistent with its age (see photos). The set has been professionally restored: the tabletop and bench seat have been sanded and refinished, and all wooden joints have been checked. Despite the new finish, the set has retained its beautiful patina.
