Excavations at Hyde Abbey, Winchester 1972-1999

This volume is a part of an integrated series of studies of Winchester’s archaeology which is largely concerned with work in the period 1971–86, but also includes relevant work of a later date. The excavations and other fieldwork described here were undertaken within the precinct of Hyde Abbey. This was founded c 1110 by King Henry I outside the north gate of the city for a monastic community formerly based at New Minster within the walls. When fully developed, the abbey precinct was divided into three parts. The inner court contained the church and cloisters. To the west, separated from them by the millstream, were the forecourt and outer court.
