American Linden (Bareroot)

American linden is a native, climate-resilient tree with value for ornamental plantings, hedgerows, and wildlife forage. Offered as bareroot stock for late fall and early spring dormant planting, it can be a cost-effective choice for larger plantings when planted correctly and given consistent watering during establishment. Tilia americana is a native tree that flowers in June and July. Its flowers are a favorite among bees, and the Xerces Society has named American linden as having special value to native bees. Linden is also a larval host to many caterpillars. Linden grows 60–80 ft tall and 30–60 ft wide. It grows in full sun, part sun, and full shade, with average, average to moist, and dry to average soil moisture preferences. It tolerates a variety of soil conditions: clay, loam, poorly drained, well-drained, sandy, gravelly, and rich soils, and is hardy in zones 2–8. With its ornamental value, pollinator support, and wildlife forage, American linden is suited to a range of ecological and landscape plantings. When planted correctly and given consistent watering, bareroot plants can establish and develop into mature trees. Bareroot stock is offered for late fall and early spring dormant planting.
