Hendrick Avercamp – Winter Landscape with Skaters
Discover 'Winter Landscape with Skaters', part of an exclusive collaboration between Kunstsokken and the Stedelijk Museum Kampen. This design is based on a work by Hendrick Avercamp, the first Dutch artist to specialise in winter landscapes, establishing a visual tradition that would define the Golden Age. Avercamp grew up in Kampen. He was born deaf and mute, and his contemporaries called him 'De Stomme van Kampen', the Mute of Kampen. What he could not express in words, he poured into paintings: teeming scenes of skaters, merchants and children, rich and poor alike sharing the frozen water. The winter of 1607–1608 was the harshest in forty years. Canals froze over, parts of the Wadden Sea lay under ice. Avercamp was twenty-three. On the cream-coloured sock you can see exactly that: the bare tree, the figures in red and blue coats, the bustle of a frozen city. Fragments of a winter from more than 400 years ago, knitted into every thread with precision. Limited Edition – Exclusive Museum Collection This painting is on display in the exhibition 'Avercamp terug in Kampen' at the Stedelijk Museum Kampen, from 3 October 2026 to 10 January 2027. The work is on loan from a private collection. This design is a one-time release. Once they're gone, they're gone.
