Provenance · Birjand Moud Moud (Mud) is a small town in the Birjand district of Khorasan, in eastern Persia near the Afghan border. Its weavers built their reputation on accuracy: the workshops there have kept to the classical repertoire rather than chasing fashion, and they knot at densities that let the drawing stay sharp. In a piece this size that discipline is what makes the pattern legible at all — the same lattice that fills a room-size Moud is here compressed into a quarter of a square metre without losing its structure. Design and Construction The field is worked in the Mahi pattern — the “fish” design of diamond lattice, curved leaves and small rosettes that Moud shares with Tabriz and Herat. It runs across an ivory ground in indigo, rose, olive, gold and soft blue, and carries a small cusped medallion at the centre with slender pendants at either end. The main border runs on rust red with a turtle-palmette vine, framed by narrow light blue and indigo guard stripes and closed by a dark navy selvedge. The fringe is left in undyed cotton at both ends. Material and Weave The pile is 95% wool and 5% silk on a fine cotton warp. The silk is not spread across the surface but reserved for highlights — individual rosettes and the contour lines of the medallion — where it catches light against the matte wool ground. The pile stands at 8 mm, low enough that the Mahi lattice keeps its definition. Quality Knotted at approximately 360,000 knots per square metre, or roughly 232 kpsi (knots per square inch). At this scale that density is what keeps the Mahi lattice legible — at a coarser knot the small rosettes would collapse into blocks of colour. Presence in the Room At 60 × 40 cm (0.24 m²) this is an accent piece rather than a floor covering: Beside a bed: a warm step down in the morning, small enough for one side only. Entrance hall: in front of a console or a coat rail, where a full runner would be too much. On a wall or a chest: the drawing rewards being looked at from close up, and at this scale it hangs easily.
