Pauwlonia 'Shan Tong'

A Paulownia hybrid that was selected for extremely fast growth, straight trunks and huge (up to 70cm) leaves. Being a super efficient C4 plant, this hybrid can easily grow 4 meters taller in a single year. Although it is bred for wood production, it is also a great ornamental in an exotic garden. Even in smaller gardens it can be a great addition. In that case the way to go is to prune the tree back to the ground each year. When new shoots appear choose one and keep removing the side shoots. This way you can enjoy the huge leaves during summer. It tolerates severe frosts. Some Paulownia's can be invasive but this hybrid is not because it does not produce seeds.
