Power in Evergreen
POWER, where a rug becomes a visual metaphor for collective energy, its pattern formed in reference to the intersecting lines of deck access city tower blocks that are part of the social and visual landscape of London. When approaching this collaboration, POoR collective drew on the parallels between woven surfaces and tower blocks through layered lines, overlapping histories and the gathering of threads that encompass a larger composition. The collective have explored rug-designing “by translating the city’s urban fabric into a literal fabric” which invites us to reflect upon belonging, memory and the formation of spaces. The POWER rug design unites elements found in iconic London tower blocks, drawing particularly on the horizontal and vertical deck-access architectural features in West London’s Trellick Tower. Special attention was made to the banding width, finding that balance was key to the symmetry within the graphic elements of the rug, reflecting contemporary expression and historical architectural language. The circular motifs found within the alternating columns echo communal gathering points and a concentric element within the eclectic rhythm and flow of the city.
