Monster Wood, 1987 — Maurice Wade (1917–1991) A characterful woodland study by Potteries painter Maurice Wade, capturing the gnarled, atmospheric quality of Monster Wood in 1987. Wade had a rare gift for finding drama and personality in the everyday landscapes of the Midlands and North — and this work is a fine example of his ability to make a familiar scene feel both intimate and quietly unsettling. "Monster Wood" is known to be once located between Longport and Tunstall it was an area of woodland running alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal at the time Wade made the painting. In the back ground sky you can see the faint industrial landscape of pit mounds and chimneys. Published in 2026 by Petr Hajek with the kind permission of the Maurice Wade Estate, this print was released to accompany the landmark exhibition Maurice Wade: A Painter from No 57 at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery (12 October 2023 – 26 January 2024).
