Rolex Explorer II 1655 Albino MK4 Dial from Original Owner with Box and Papers
Introduced in 1971, the Rolex Explorer II Reference 1655 was developed as a purpose-built tool watch for speleologists, cave explorers, and adventurers working in environments where distinguishing between day and night becomes nearly impossible. To solve this challenge, Rolex equipped the model with a fixed 24-hour bezel and a large luminous orange 24-hour hand, allowing the wearer to track a full day-night cycle at a glance. With its bold design and highly functional execution, the reference 1655 remains one of the most distinctive and characterful vintage Rolex sports models ever produced. Presented here is an outstanding example from 1979, found with its original owner. As unique as it is, the watch features a superb untouched thick case with strong lines and excellent proportions throughout — exactly the kind of case definition collectors look for in this reference. We never use the word “unpolished”—but make up your own mind when you look at those lines and shapes… The 24-hour bezel is equally impressive, showing only light wear with no major defects or deep scratches. The Mk4 dial has developed a beautiful, even patina over time, with a soft yellow-toned lume that adds warmth and character. The signature orange 24-hour hand has also faded to a lighter yellow hue — a highly sought-after effect often referred to by collectors as the “albino” configuration. In combination with the mellow yellow lume, this gives the watch a wonderfully cohesive vintage aesthetic. The watch is fitted with a Rolex Oyster bracelet, reference 78360, complete with end links stamped 580 and a clasp coded “A.” Furthermore, the watch comes with its original inner and outer boxes, three booklets, plastic document holder, and its original punched guarantee papers — a complete and highly attractive set that adds significantly to its appeal. The watch has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready for new adventures over the coming years.
