Not Joan Rivers...it's Joan Rutabaga. Joan isn’t the biggest rutabaga variety, but it is consistently remarked upon as one of the best-tasting root vegetable varieties – sweeter than many carrots – with a trace of the classic brassica flavor. It is excellent mashed (with or without potatoes – and better than mashed potatoes alone). Or, it can be baked into traditional pies. We however like it mashed and fried into latkes (Sunday breakfasts!). Rutabagas are the prototypal homestead crop. Planted in succession from spring through late summer, they provide continuous harvests – and harvests that can be left in the ground late into the cold days of autumn for a long-storing winter supply of food. Joan is a disease-resistant variety (notably resistant to club-root and mildews), Welsh in origin, and highly adapted to long, cool, wet seasons. It is purple blushed, cream fleshed, and matures to about the size of a softball (in 90 days). Not the biggest rutabaga variety, but outstanding in flavor, very long storing, and adapted to organic production. (Our seed is organically produced in seacoast climate conditions). 50+ Seeds (0.25 grams)
