Prolite Sockeye Salmon Rod - 7'10" Medium-Light Moderate Downrigger Trolling Rod for Kokanee (6-12 lb)
The Prolite Sockeye Salmon Rod is a 7'10" medium-light, moderate-action downrigger trolling rod, hand-built to land soft-mouthed sockeye salmon and kokanee — the rod we reach for on Baker Lake and on kokanee reservoirs across the country. Sockeye and kokanee have soft, easily-torn mouths, and most rods lose them right at the boat. We build this one on Batson's Rainshadow RX6 blank, which blends a sensitive graphite lower section with a forgiving E-Glass tip. The result is a slow-loading, parabolic action that works like a shock absorber: it cushions every head-shake so the hook stays buttoned, while still telegraphing the lightest take through your dodger. At 7'10" it's an ideal downrigger length — long enough to load cleanly into the release clip and reach past the gunwale, light enough to fish all day. The medium-light power and 6-12 lb rating match the mono and braid setups anglers run behind a dodger and Smile Blade at slow, 0.8-1.2 mph trolling speeds. Best for: downrigger trolling for sockeye salmon (Baker Lake, Lake Wenatchee, the Columbia system) and kokanee in reservoirs across the West. It also doubles as a capable light salmon, trout, and live-bait trolling rod.
