University of Glasgow Library – Miniature Concrete Model
Model 084_University Library, Glasgow – Miniature Concrete Model Hand-cast in fine concrete. Shaped by memory. Some buildings become worlds of their own. The University of Glasgow Library and the connected Hunterian Art Gallery, designed by William Whitfield and completed in the late 1960s, stand among the most significant pieces of post-war architecture in Scotland. Rising above the historic campus, the library's powerful tower and layered concrete forms create a striking contrast with the university's Victorian buildings. Together, the library and gallery represent a moment when higher education embraced a bold modern future. This model captures that relationship. The challenge was balancing the library's vertical presence with the lower, interconnected forms of the Hunterian. The tower, terraces, and geometric volumes all needed to work together at a smaller scale. I spent time refining the proportions until the model felt like a true reflection of the original composition. A small cast of one of Scotland's great academic landmarks.
