This is a one time purchase of a previously featured Sequential Underground reader box. This is not an ongoing subscription. Our music-themed box is one of our favorites to put together. It gives us an opportunity to combine music and storytelling in a new way that fits your reading goals and allows you to see your beloved artists and songs differently. Patti Smith is both a musical and literary icon, reminding us that we all contain multitudes. As she famously said, “I have loved books all my life. There is nothing more beautiful in our material world than the book.” We definitely agree. Happy reading. Featuring: 33 1/3 - Patti Smith's Horses by Philip Shaw This month’s theme is “G-L-O-R-I-A,” and while the name itself has its musical roots dating back to hymnals hundreds of years ago, it took on a whole new meaning when Van Morrison and the band Them used it in a call and response “G-L-O-R-I-A, Glooooria” in their song of the same name. So this year, for our annual music box, we wanted to celebrate not only a musical icon, but a literary ingénue who took that classic song and made it her own. Within the pages of this month’s selection from the 33 ⅓ series, Philip Shaw explores one of Patti Smith’s definitive albums, Horses. Already a centerpiece of the early New York City punk scene, Horses showcased the poetry and beauty of Smith’s work which we would later see in books such as M Train, Just Kids, and many others. Ley Lines No. 19: Trance 'N Dance by Diana H. Chu Trance ‘N Dance is a museum guide to decoding the universal language of music, to the tune of Patti Smith, Henri Rousseau, Jimi Hendrix, and artifacts from all cultures. This annotated narrative is a metaphysical guidebook to another plane, a simple song of love on repeat. We love the 33 ⅓ series because it allows us to explore music on both a literary and scholarship level. This zine also reflects that beautiful relationship between artistic instinct, classical studies, and cultural narratives.
