Get Familiar 7
Published twice a year, Get Familiar is a culture magazine from the Netherlands that explores the relationship between hip hop and the world around us. What grabbed us about this issue… This issue features six interviews with creatives across music, publishing, film and fashion design. We enjoyed the conversation with saxophonist Kamasi Washington, whose passion for jazz helped him modernise the genre and push him to the forefront of the global jazz renaissance. If you're more into fashion, Jeff Staple's discussion of hip hop's influence on streetwear is worth a look. There's also a directory of producers, labels and artists at the front of the mag, which is handy if you want to find something new. Who's Get Familiar for? Get Familiar is one to reach for when you want to think deeply about the creative industries. It doesn't require you to be a fan of hip hop music, but a working knowledge of the genre helps, as this one goes beyond the music and into the socio-political conversations around it. Despite its smaller format, it feels more like a considered long read than something to dip in and out of. Type: Long-form, interview-led Pages: 72 Instagram: @getfamiliarmag
