Japanese Antique Lacquer Sea Bream Tray

A beautifully executed antique Japanese lacquer tray with fitted lid, fashioned in the form of a fish, combining functional tableware with the sophisticated decorative traditions of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship. The boldly sculptural form depicts a fish with an elaborately articulated body, finely detailed scales, fins, tail, and expressive head. The exterior is finished in a rich gold and red lacquer palette, with the entire body covered in an exceptionally fine, repeating overlapping scale pattern that gives the surface remarkable texture and visual depth. The head is especially detailed, with delicately rendered facial features, fins, and scale work. The tail and dorsal fins are emphasized with linear gold decoration against the warm red lacquer ground. The fish-shaped upper section lifts away as a fitted lid, revealing a spacious interior finished in brilliant vermilion red lacquer. The contrast between the lustrous red interior and the finely ornamented gold exterior is particularly striking. The removable lid follows the contours of the fish, demonstrating the considerable skill required to create such an elaborate three-dimensional lacquer form. The imagery may represent a tai (鯛), or sea bream, one of the most auspicious fish in Japanese culture. Tai is particularly associated with good fortune, celebration, prosperity, and felicitous occasions, in part because its name forms a pun with medetai, meaning auspicious or celebratory.
