Red Wine Menin Douro Estates Douro’s New Legacy 2018, 75cl Douro
Douro’s New Legacy Reserva 2018 is produced from a strict selection of vineyard parcels across the estate, totalling 42 hectares. The vineyards range from 45 to 100 years of age, requiring detailed assessment of each parcel’s evolution to determine its full potential. This diversity of old vines and varieties contributes significantly to the wine’s complexity and identity. Vintage The 2018 growing season began very dry and cold. From March onwards, rainfall increased significantly during spring, leading to higher disease pressure (notably downy mildew) and reduced yields. The summer remained relatively mild and humid, followed by a sudden heatwave in August. Soil water reserves proved essential, allowing balanced ripening and resulting in a high-quality vintage with remarkable equilibrium. Harvest Harvest began on 19 September and lasted 28 days, with strategic pauses to wait for optimal ripeness of each parcel. Grapes were hand-harvested and transported in 18 kg crates to preserve quality. Winemaking 60% Old Vines (approx. 100 years) and 40% Touriga Franca (45 years). After careful sorting, grapes were fully destemmed, gently crushed and transferred by gravity into stainless steel tanks. A 48-hour cold pre-fermentation maceration was followed by alcoholic fermentation at 25–27 ºC. Due to the high quality of the fruit, an extended skin maceration was carried out to enhance structure and complexity. The wine was then transferred to 225-litre oak barrels. Ageing Aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 90% French and 10% American.
